Keyboard critics rush to call owners lazy or disingenuous, slapping digital boycotts on neighborhood spots that are simply trying to keep their lights on.

That hostility ignores the immense financial pressure facing independent enterprises right now.

Running a grassroots operation involves navigating razor-thin profit margins, soaring supply costs, and relentless overhead. Expecting a local shop owner to hire a professional creative agency or spend hours staging elaborate commercial photo shoots for a daily social media post is wildly out of touch.

All that is in addition to the ever-present time crunch that leaves small business owners who are also often the only employee, wishing for more hours in the day to get things done. Many will agree that the time-saving aspect of Ai is even more relevant than affordability.

When independent operators turn to digital tools, they are not trying to fool anyone. They are trying to survive in a crowded media landscape dominated by massive corporations with endless advertising budgets.

Industry experts have urged consumers to rethink these knee-jerk online attacks. Local businesses form the backbone of our economy, and penalizing them over a software choice hurts our own neighborhoods.
